Custom Surf Housing Examples for Still Cameras

Surf housings are typically designed to be light weight, but rugged. Since surf photographers generally swim with the housing out of the water, the housings need to be as light weight as possible. These housings usually do not need to go deep, but do need to withstand the same wave abuse that their operators are subjected to.

They are generally rated at a nominal 10 to 25 feet, depending on size, and usually have reinforced corners to maximize the strength of the bond lines. Close attention is paid to the human engineering to cluster the most commonly used controls for ease of use. Handles must be rugged, and placed for best balance out of the water. Common configurations are one or two side handles, one side and one bottom handle, and fixed or removable pistol grip.

Shown below are examples of designs we have done, with some notes about the requirements and how they were met.

Surf Housing for Canon EOS-A2 (1997)
This surf housing was for a Canon EOS-A2 with either 24mm or 80mm (illustrated) lenses.

It featured a removable pistol grip handle with an electrical shutter release (see black cable inside). In addition, this housing has Zoom and normal Shutter release controls under the side handles. The characteristics of these two lenses required two different front doors. The white line has a piece of chamois to wipe water droplets from the port when shooting out of the water.

Note also the reinforcements inside the corners of the housing, making this an extremely rugged, but light weight housing.

Surf Housing for Canon AE1 (1978)
This surf housing was for a Canon AE1, winder, and both 28mm and 80mm lenses.

It featured handles on one side and the bottom, so the surfer could easily rotate the housing from landscape to portrait orientation, without letting go of either handle. The Focus control is under the bottom handle, and Shutter Release is under the right handle, and On-Off is on the top of the housing. The Shutter Release control is ring-shaped, so it can be activated with a string from behind, or from the front by routing the string over the top of the right handle support.
